The Department of Geography at the University of Zanjan was established in the academic year 1371 (1992) with the admission of students in the field of Urban Geography. Over the years, the development of the Department of Geography—in terms of the diversity of disciplines, the expansion of graduate studies, the number of students enrolled in the field, research indicators, laboratory and equipment indicators, and human resources—has made it one of the leading departments in geographical studies in the country.

The content of the specialized courses in this field is inherently different from other disciplines in the Faculty of Humanities, and modern technologies such as satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and GIS are used in a workshop format in every course. In terms of modern equipment, the Department of Geography at the University of Zanjan is among the prominent departments in Iran.

The faculty members of the Department of Geography consist of 12 assistant professors and 4 associate professors. Additionally, 3 educational experts and 2 site administrators collaborate with the department on a full-time basis. The department also benefits from the services of a number of adjunct professors for teaching courses.

In 1388 (2009), the Department of Geography ranked first in the university in terms of the number of its graduates admitted to the national master's entrance exam, with 92 of its bachelor's graduates passing the exam. The department currently admits students in 5 bachelor's programs, 10 master's programs, and 5 doctoral programs, and in terms of the number of enrolled students—currently with 617 undergraduate students, 211 master's students, and 11 doctoral students—it is one of the largest specialized departments of the university.

In a word, it can be said that the subject of geography is "place," and this science studies place to the extent that it relates to human life. In this study, it attempts to understand the Earth's surface in terms of all its characteristics, such as cold and heat, fertility, softness and hardness, salinity and sweetness, dryness and humidity, and thousands of other features. For this reason, direct observation of the Earth is the principal method of studying geography.
